With the school year ending, children across Peterborough will be spending more time outdoors and OPP are reminding drivers that summer brings a different set of road safety challenges.
Whether it’s children riding bicycles, walking to parks, visiting friends or simply playing outside, motorists should expect increased activity in residential neighbourhoods throughout the day.
Constable James Clarke has this reminder for drivers.
Police say children can be unpredictable, making it especially important for motorists to reduce their speed, scan carefully for pedestrians and cyclists, and be prepared to stop at any moment.
Clarke also reminds drivers to give cyclists plenty of room and remain alert for sudden movements.
The safety message isn’t aimed solely at motorists.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to talk with children about crossing streets safely, staying aware of traffic and wearing properly fitted bicycle helmets whenever they ride.
Police say drivers should also remain especially cautious during the evening hours when neighbourhoods are still busy but visibility begins to decrease.
Officials say a little extra patience and awareness from drivers, cyclists, parents and children can go a long way toward ensuring everyone enjoys a safe summer.
