Members of the Peterborough Police Service Traffic Unit laid 43 charges during a targeted enforcement operation Tuesday focusing on three intersections along Lansdowne Street, with the majority of offences tied to distracted driving.
Police say the June 23, 2026, enforcement detail focused primarily on drivers using hand-held communication devices while operating a motor vehicle, a behaviour that continues to be identified as a leading contributor to collisions across Ontario.
Of the charges laid, 34 were for driving while using a hand-held communication device.
Officers also issued two charges for failing to stop at a red light, two for driving while under suspension, one for failing to properly wear a seatbelt, one for using plates not in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, and a number of additional document-related offences.
Twelve warnings were also issued for minor infractions during the operation.
Police noted the enforcement took place at intersections along Lansdowne Street, several of which regularly appear on the City of Peterborough’s list of high-collision locations.
Distracted driving has been a persistent focus for law enforcement agencies across Ontario, with police continuing to warn that even brief attention away from the road can significantly increase the risk of a crash.
The Peterborough Police Service says it will continue to conduct targeted traffic enforcement initiatives throughout the year in an effort to improve road safety and reduce collisions.
