Parks Canada is warning residents, boaters and visitors to expect higher-than-normal water levels and flows throughout the Trent–Severn Waterway as officials respond to recent precipitation across the watershed.
In an advisory issued this week, Parks Canada said elevated water levels are expected to continue until further notice while water management staff work to balance conditions across the system.
As part of those efforts, flows on the Otonabee River will be increased outside of regular navigation hours to help manage water levels throughout the watershed.
Officials say changing conditions could create hazards around dams, locks, water control structures and shorelines, where water levels and currents may shift rapidly.
Boaters are being urged to exercise caution while on the water, while waterfront residents and visitors are advised to remain alert near waterways and avoid unnecessary risks around fast-moving water.
The Trent–Severn Waterway stretches more than 380 kilometres across central Ontario and relies on a network of locks, dams and control structures to regulate water levels and support navigation, recreation and environmental management.
Parks Canada says staff continue to actively monitor conditions throughout the watershed and will make further adjustments to water management operations as required.
No timeline has been provided for when water levels and flows may return to seasonal norms. Officials say updates will be issued as conditions change.
