What’s old is new again at Millbrook’s 4th Line Theatre with the reprisal of Schoolhouse to open the 2026 summer season at the Winslow Farm.
Written by Leanna Brodie, and staged by 4th Line in 2007 and 2008, the play is set in a rural Ontario one-room schoolhouse in 1938. It’s there that young teacher Melita Linton tries to guide a spirited class of farm children while helping a troubled teen boy find his way.
Exploring themes of compassion, exclusion and belonging while celebrating the culture and challenges of rural education as it was, Schoolhouse is rich in both humour and humanity.
Alex Pearce, who portrays Miss Linton, shares more about the play’s central character.
Director Monica Dottor, who also serves as choreographer, outlines what makes Schoolhouse special and well worthy of a return run.
Dottor says the story will prove quite relatable to audiences.
Schoolhouse opens June 30th and continues Tuesday through Saturday until July 25th, with an added performance Monday, July 20th.
