The City of Peterborough is moving ahead with a major upgrade of its Municipal Snow Storage Facility on Kennedy Road, with construction expected to begin this summer and continue into next year.
City officials say the project is designed to improve stormwater management, support environmental sustainability and enhance long-term operations at the site.
Work is scheduled to take place between June and October 2026, with additional finishing work anticipated in 2027.
The project will focus on improving how runoff from snow storage activities is collected, treated and managed before it enters the natural environment. New infrastructure will be installed to help improve water quality and protect the nearby Otonabee River and surrounding ecosystems.
Planned improvements include site preparation, grading and reshaping, removal of aging culverts, invasive species, fencing and debris, and the installation of new stormwater infrastructure.
The project will also see the construction of a stormwater management facility featuring a bioswale designed to filter and manage runoff, along with an engineered wetland to further improve water treatment. Additional work includes paving portions of the site, installing new lighting, and planting trees and shrubs as part of reforestation efforts.
City officials say the improvements will not only support ongoing snow storage operations but also provide environmental benefits by reducing the impact of runoff on local waterways.
The project is part of the municipality’s broader infrastructure strategy aimed at supporting growth while protecting natural resources.
An environmental assessment for the project was completed in 2023 following community consultation. The initiative has also received Environmental Compliance Approval from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
Construction is expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2026, with final elements scheduled for completion in 2027.
