The Peterborough Police Service has expanded its community policing fleet with the addition of two new e-bikes funded through proceeds from a local charity golf tournament.
The electric bicycles were purchased using funds donated by the organizers of the 2nd Annual Mimosas and Mulligans Golf Tournament, held in August 2025. The event was organized by Shelby Leonard-Watt, owner of S.O.S Save Our Soles in downtown Peterborough.
For the second consecutive year, the Peterborough Police Service’s Community F.I.R.S.T. Unit was selected as one of the tournament’s charitable beneficiaries.
After the donation was accepted by the Peterborough Police Service Board, the service purchased two e-bikes from Huntsville-based 171 E-bike Co. The bicycles arrived in May, and officers have since completed training on their operation and maintenance.
The bikes have been outfitted with police decals as well as red and blue emergency lights and will be used by Community F.I.R.S.T. officers throughout the city.
Police say the e-bikes will help improve officer visibility, particularly in the downtown core, while allowing officers to access areas that may be more difficult to reach by vehicle.
Chief Stuart Betts said the donation will have an immediate impact on policing operations and community engagement efforts.
“We are very thankful for this donation and applaud the community spirit of all our local businesses and residents who supported the golf tournament,” Betts said in a statement. “It was important to us to consider equipment that would have an immediate impact on officer visibility in the downtown core. The ability to respond in areas of the city more easily accessible by two wheels and have the option to access electric speed was very appealing.”
Leonard-Watt said tournament organizers were pleased to support a program that helps officers maintain a visible presence in the community.
“Community First plays an important role in our downtown, and we’re proud that our tournament helped fund two new e-bikes that will allow officers to be more visible, mobile, and engaged throughout the community,” she said. “We’re incredibly grateful to our sponsors, players, and everyone who came out to support the event and help make this contribution possible.”
The e-bikes are expected to be used in support of public safety initiatives and community outreach efforts across Peterborough.
