A Toronto driver has been charged with stunt driving after being clocked travelling more than double the posted speed limit on Highway 7 in Asphodel-Norwood Township.
Peterborough County OPP say the incident happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. on June 5, when an officer on patrol observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in an 80 km/h zone.
Police say radar recorded the vehicle at 166 km/h as it passed in the opposite direction.
The officer conducted a traffic stop and arrested the driver, a 21-year-old Toronto man who was reportedly travelling to a friend’s cottage at the time.
As a result, the driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with drive motor vehicle — perform stunt/excessive speed.
Police say the accused had his driver’s licence suspended for 30 days and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days. A court date has also been set.
OPP say speed enforcement is focused on road safety and reducing serious collisions.
“Reduced speeds translates to reduced collisions which means fewer deaths and injuries on our roads,” police noted in a safety reminder, adding that drivers can avoid penalties by obeying posted speed limits.
The OPP also encouraged members of the public to report suspected illegal activity to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at stopcrimehere.ca.
The charge has not been proven in court.
