Vandalism at a downtown restaurant has many people asking what can be done to stop attacks against small businesses in the community.
A picture of a smashed front window was posted by ‘La Mesita’ on George Street, with owners saying the damage was done early Sunday morning.
Chef Martin Carbajal and his wife Kelly opened the spot in 2017.
While expressing gratitude for the support, the pair said they are not seeking donations and would prefer residents support the business through purchases instead.
“If you want to support us, come buy our food, order catering for your family or business or get a gift card,” they wrote. “We would much rather earn your money than take it.”
The owners added that anyone who has already sent money is encouraged to visit the business and receive food or gift cards equivalent to the amount contributed.
According to the update, the individual allegedly responsible has been arrested and police have kept the business informed throughout the investigation.
The owners said the incident is expected to cost the business several thousand dollars and questioned why similar incidents continue to affect small businesses operating in downtown Peterborough.
Despite the setback, the message focused largely on gratitude, with Martin and Kelly thanking customers and community members for their continued support.
