Peterborough’s visual arts community is mourning the loss of local artist and arts patron Peer Christensen.
Christensen died May 25th at age 72 following a battle with brain cancer.
A native of Denmark who moved to Canada in 1959 as a child, Christensen maintained a gallery and studio at Christensen Fine Art, first in downtown Peterborough and, more recently, on Lisburn Street. Involved in the gallery and picture framing business for 35 years, his knowledge of art conservation and framing practices was sought out over many years by a number of galleries and heritage-related organizations.
In addition, Christensen served as a member of the City of Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee, and was a member of the City of Peterborough Arts, Culture and Heritage Advisory Committee and the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Art Committee.
A memorial service for Christensen will be held August 12th, 11 a.m., at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Peterborough. Donations in his name can be made to Hospice Peterborough or the Art Gallery of Peterborough.
