The Peterborough Laker Classic returns this weekend, bringing hundreds of young athletes and their families to the city for one of Ontario’s longest-running minor lacrosse tournaments.
Hosted by the Peterborough Minor Lacrosse Association, the annual event runs from May 22nd through the 24th and marks its 41st year in operation. The tournament has earned historical status as Ontario’s premier early-season lacrosse event, attracting teams from across the province to compete for division championships and the coveted Classic Cup awarded to the organization with the strongest combined performance throughout the weekend.
Organizers say the event has become a major tradition within the lacrosse community and continues to grow each year.
Keith Calderwood, a coach and former board member with the association, says the tournament also provides a significant boost for the local economy as visiting teams fill hotels, restaurants, and local businesses throughout the weekend.
Calderwood says the event’s success over four decades comes from strong community support and a passion for the sport that continues to thrive in Peterborough.
Along with the economic impact, organizers say the tournament plays an important role in the development of young athletes by giving them an opportunity to compete against high-level teams early in the season.
Calderwood says tournaments like the Laker Classic help players build confidence, teamwork, and lasting memories in the sport.
Games will take place throughout the weekend at venues across Peterborough, with teams competing for both individual division titles and overall organizational bragging rights through the Classic Cup standings.
Organizers say the continued growth of the tournament after 41 years reflects the strong connection between Peterborough and the game of lacrosse.
