Vehicle owners take note – failing to have your tires re-torqued after the changeover from winter to summer tires could have serious consequences as well as result in a hefty fine should a tire fly off your vehicle.
On May 8th, a tire came off a vehicle eastbound on Highway 417 and smashed through the window of a westbound vehicle, resulting in facial injuries to the driver. Under the Highway Traffic Act, the owner of the vehicle that lost the tire faces a fine of up to $2,000.
Currie Tire and Auto Service owner Matt Currie says if your mechanic isn’t advising that you return to have newly-installed tires re-torqued, they should be.
Currie says that while many drivers change over their tires themselves, re-tightening the wheel lug nuts after a short while shouldn’t be ignored.
Currie says “a bit of an odd year” sees his shop busy with tire changeovers well into next month.
