A winter outreach initiative led by PATH (Peterborough Action for Tiny Homes) in partnership with United Way Peterborough & District helped distribute more than 1,000 coats to residents across the region during one of the coldest winters in recent memory.
The Coats for Community campaign provided approximately 1,004 adult coats and 150 children’s coats to individuals and families in need throughout Peterborough and surrounding communities.
Volunteers collected donated winter clothing and hosted monthly pickup days on the first Saturday of each month, ensuring consistent access to warm clothing throughout the season.
PATH coordinator Bev Assinck said the community response was strong, noting that donations included coats, boots, sleeping bags and other winter survival items.
She said the initiative highlighted how residents are increasingly thoughtful about donating items that directly support people facing hardship during winter months.
Assinck added the organization plans to refine the program next year and hopes to expand public access days.
While the seasonal campaign has now ended, organizers say the need remains ongoing as local agencies continue to face funding pressures and increased demand for services.
PATH and United Way are encouraging residents to continue supporting outreach efforts year-round through donations, volunteering and community involvement.
PATH is currently seeking specific items including running shoes, seasonal clothing, hygiene essentials, Tim Hortons gift cards and large grocery bags to support ongoing outreach programs.
