Trent University has announced the return of Joe Muldoon as head coach of the Trent Excalibur men’s curling program for the 2026-27 season.
Nathan McFadden, the university’s director of Athletics and Recreation, said Muldoon brings extensive coaching experience and a proven track record of developing competitive student-athletes.
Muldoon previously coached the men’s curling team from 2016 to 2022 before moving to the women’s program following the retirement of longtime coach Dave Farnell. During his tenure with the women’s team, the Excalibur earned Ontario University Athletics quarterfinal appearances and consistent top-eight finishes in the province.
His efforts were recognized during the 2022-23 season when he was named Ontario University Athletics Women’s Curling Coach of the Year.
In 2024-25, Muldoon transitioned into a lead assistant coaching role while Dillon Muldoon took over the women’s program. Under Dillon Muldoon, the women’s team recorded its best provincial finish since 2008, placing fourth in Ontario during the 2025-26 season.
McFadden said the university is fortunate to have a strong curling coaching staff and called Muldoon an integral part of the program’s success.
Muldoon returns to the men’s team after the program posted a breakthrough season under former head coach Brad Robinson. The Excalibur secured their first Ontario University Athletics playoff berth since 2013 and finished among the province’s top eight teams during the 2025-26 campaign.
Muldoon said he is excited to return to the role and looks forward to continuing the development of Trent’s student-athletes at both the OUA and U SPORTS levels.
