Peterborough Regional Health Centre has completed its first patient procedure using new Endoscopic Ultrasound technology, marking a major expansion of specialized care available in the region.
The first procedure was recently performed by gastroenterologist Dr. Olufemi Aoko, who joined PRHC in October 2025.
Endoscopic Ultrasound, known as EUS, combines an endoscope with ultrasound imaging to provide detailed, real-time views of the digestive tract and surrounding organs, including the pancreas, liver and gallbladder. The technology is used to help diagnose illnesses, stage cancers, guide biopsies and support treatment planning.
Hospital officials say that before the addition of EUS technology, many patients requiring the specialized procedure would have needed to travel to hospitals outside the region.
Dr. Aoko said the new equipment allows procedures and biopsies to be performed locally while also improving diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning for patients across the region.
PRHC provides gastroenterology services to a referral population of roughly 600,000 people and is currently the only hospital between Kingston and Scarborough offering EUS within its gastroenterology program.
The hospital says the technology was made possible through donor support provided by the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation.
Foundation president and CEO Lesley Heighway said investments in advanced medical technology help improve patient care close to home while also attracting specialized healthcare professionals to the region.
