A new voice is stepping into a long-established choral tradition in Peterborough, with Shawn Grenke preparing to take over leadership of the Peterborough Singers as the group looks ahead to its next season.
Grenke, originally from Belleville, officially becomes artistic director and conductor on July 1, succeeding Syd Birrell, who retired in December. He currently serves as director of music at Eglinton St George’s United Church in Toronto and teaches conducting at Brock University.
For Grenke, the appeal of choral music goes beyond performance, especially at a time when he says it can offer something steady in an unsettled world.
Grenke said choral music can provide a sense of grounding during difficult periods.
Looking ahead, Grenke already has a sense of direction for the 2026–27 season. He says audiences can expect the return of Handel’s Messiah, while also pointing to a stronger emphasis on Canadian choral works.
As he prepares to step into the role, Grenke says he is focused on building on the foundation already in place within the organization.
Founded in 1990 by Birrell, the Peterborough Singers have presented more than 100 concerts over their history, becoming a mainstay of the local arts community.
