A bursary supporting students dealing with the lasting effects of sports-related concussions is once again open for applications, with the deadline now just days away.
The H.O.P.E. Bursary was established in memory of former Peterborough Pete and NHL defenceman Steve Montador and is aimed at helping students who are transitioning from high school to post-secondary education while managing concussion-related challenges that require a reduced academic load.
Eligible students from Peterborough city and county high schools who have already registered for a first-year post-secondary program can apply.
The program continues to be administered by the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation. Executive director Vince Bierworth says the bursary reflects Montador’s willingness to speak openly about his own experiences with concussion and its long-term impact.
Speaking about the connection between Montador’s legacy and the bursary’s purpose, Bierworth explains how the initiative is rooted in family involvement and awareness.
Bierworth adds that in recent years there has been significant progress in how concussion is understood and addressed, both locally and beyond.
He points to ongoing work in the region aimed at improving education and support around brain injuries.
Looking at the broader picture, Bierworth notes that concussion education has been a consistent focus for the foundation over many years.
He says that long-standing commitment has included a range of initiatives designed to raise awareness and support those affected.
Applications remain open until Friday at gphsf.ca/stevemontador/
