TELUS Cup introductory press conference in Peterborough
The national TELUS Cup is about to get underway in Peterborough, with local leaders highlighting both the excitement and economic impact of the week-long tournament.
Mayor Jeff Leal says the event is a point of pride for the community.
“Peterborough is proud to welcome athletes, coaches, families and fans from across Canada for the TELUS Cup,” Leal said. “This is a chance to see some of the best young hockey talent in the country right here at home, experience the excitement of a national championship, and cheer on our own Junior Petes.”
The tournament is being held at the Peterborough Memorial Centre starting this morning, with preliminary round games scheduled daily at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Semifinals will be played Saturday, followed by bronze and gold medal games Sunday.
Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith says hosting the championship will have benefits beyond the ice.
“Bringing a national championship like the TELUS Cup to the Peterborough Memorial Centre is a massive win for our community,” Smith said. “This tournament puts a national spotlight on Peterborough, drawing families and fans from across Canada to our local hotels, restaurants, and shops.”
Smith added the event is an opportunity to showcase the city’s hospitality and hockey tradition while supporting local businesses.
The tournament features some of Canada’s top under-18 players, including the host Junior Petes, and is expected to draw crowds throughout the week.
