TELUS Cup introductory press conference in Peterborough
This week serves as a great reminder that hockey season is not over in Peterborough.
The city is hosting the TELUS Cup at the Memorial Centre, Canada’s U18 men’s national club championship, featuring the best under-18 teams from across the country competing for national honours.
PTBOTODAY.ca spoke with fans outside the PMC on Monday about what they are most excited about.
Among its alumni are some of hockey’s biggest names, including first-overall NHL draft picks Gord Kluzak, Wendel Clark and Sidney Crosby, along with stars such as Rod Brind’Amour, Jordan Eberle, Ron Francis, Kris Letang, Ryan O’Reilly, Morgan Rielly, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Mark Stone and Steve Yzerman.
The tournament format brings together six teams: five regional champions and a host team. The Quebec representative comes from the LHM18AAAQ, while other regional berths are filled by champions from the Pacific region (B.C. and Alberta), West (Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Northwestern Ontario), Central (GTHL, OMHA, HEO and others), and Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island).
After the round robin, the top four teams advance to the semifinals, with first place playing fourth and second facing third. Winners move on to the gold medal game, while the remaining teams meet in the bronze medal matchup.
