Lakelands Public Health is urging residents and business owners to take precautions as ongoing rainfall leads to flooding across the region.
Officials say saturated ground conditions are increasing runoff and flood risk. Multiple conservation authorities have issued flood warnings or watches, including Otonabee Conservation, Kawartha Conservation, Lower Trent Conservation, Crowe Valley Conservation, and Ganaraska Region Conservation. Provincial flood warnings are also in place for parts of the region, including Peterborough and Minden.
Residents are advised to:
- Avoid contact with floodwater and keep children and pets away
- Use caution around fast-moving or deep water
- Wash thoroughly after any contact with floodwater
- Avoid consuming any food exposed to floodwater
Communications Manager, Ashley Ann Beaulac, warn that floodwater is unsafe and may contain bacteria, chemicals, debris, and sewage.
Beaulac says those with private wells are being told to assume their water is unsafe if flooding has occurred nearby and to use alternate water sources until it is confirmed safe.
Flooding may also affect septic systems, and residents are encouraged to reduce water use and consider pumping tanks if needed.
Beaulac adds that during cleanup, people should wear protective equipment and ensure proper ventilation to reduce mould risks.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from local conservation authorities and municipalities for information on conditions, road closures, and available supports. More information is available at LakelandsPH.ca/FloodSafety or by calling 1-844-575-4567.
