The province is expanding alcohol rules in provincial parks, allowing adults to consume alcoholic beverages in more public areas beginning this season.
Under the changes, visitors aged 19 and older can drink responsibly in most areas of Ontario Parks, including picnic areas, beaches and other day-use spaces, rather than being limited to individual campsites.
Environment Minister Todd McCarthy said the move is intended to enhance the visitor experience while supporting tourism. “Ontario Parks are some of the province’s most sought-after destinations for day trips and overnight camping,” he said, adding the updated rules will help people “relax and spend time with family and friends” while strengthening local economies.
McCarthy said the province will continue to prioritize safety, noting “updated rules around where alcohol can be consumed are intended to improve the overall park experience… while continuing to prioritize safety.”
Officials say alcohol will still be prohibited in certain areas, including culturally sensitive sites and higher-risk locations, with signage posted. Existing laws will remain in effect for public intoxication, underage drinking and impaired driving.
