The Ontario government is investing $537,788 in research at Trent University through the Ontario Research Fund to support five projects focused on environmental science, health, climate, and technology.
The province says the funding is part of a broader $47 million investment supporting 195 research projects across Ontario. The program provides funding for equipment and infrastructure at colleges, universities, and hospitals to advance research and innovation.
In Peterborough, the funded projects include:
- Environmental Protection ($149,049): Developing biopolymers from living organisms to help remove pollutants from water.
- Ecosystem Preservation ($135,338): Studying nitrogen levels and their impact on aquatic systems and plant diversity.
- Health and Aging ($99,104): Research on how obesity, aging, and chronic disease affect muscle and fat tissue, including cardiovascular impacts.
- Climate Resilience ($83,593): Examining how temperature stress affects metabolism in native mammals and climate adaptation.
- Cognitive Rehabilitation ($70,704): Using EEG technology to study hearing loss and explore music-based therapy in rehabilitation.
Trent University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Cathy Bruce said the funding will help researchers advance their work by improving access to infrastructure and equipment, while also supporting student training.
The province says the investment is aimed at strengthening Ontario’s competitiveness, supporting job creation, and advancing innovation in sectors such as life sciences, agriculture, manufacturing, and critical minerals.
