Lower Trent Conservation has issued a flood warning for Rice Lake and the Trent River from Hastings to Trenton due to rising water levels during spring runoff.
The agency says the Trent River system is in full spring freshet, with snowmelt and forecast rainfall expected to increase water flows over the coming days. Between 25 to 30 mm of rain is forecast Sunday, followed by up to 60 mm over the next five days, with possible thunderstorms adding to localized rainfall.
Officials warn that high water levels may lead to flooding in low-lying areas, including driveways, access roads, and waterfront properties. Fast-moving currents and cold water conditions also pose safety risks.
Residents are being asked to secure docks and boats, ensure sump pumps are working, and keep children and pets away from all waterways. Areas near dams, culverts, and bridges should also be avoided.
The flood warning remains in effect until Friday, April 17, at 4 pm.
