Peterborough City Council is voicing its support for the proposed ALTO high-speed rail line and is urging the federal government to include a stop in the city.
Mayor Jeff Leal and council have signed a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney outlining their support for the project and Peterborough’s inclusion along the route between Toronto and Québec City.
“This project is a generational opportunity for Peterborough,” said Leal. “It will connect our community to other parts of the province and country, create jobs, drive investment, and increase tourism for our region. City Council is united in supporting Peterborough as a stop, and we appreciate the federal government’s work to expedite this transformative nation-building project.”
Council formally backed the move during a March 23 meeting, voting unanimously in favour of supporting Peterborough as a stop on the planned line. The letter to the Prime Minister, signed by all members of council, reflects that position.
City officials say a stop in Peterborough would support economic growth, improve access in and out of the region, and help attract new business and tourism while creating jobs over time.
The City says it plans to continue working with federal partners as the project moves forward.
