Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says his party would cancel the proposed Alto rail project, arguing it is too costly and slow to deliver.
During a stop at a farm in Peterborough, Poilievre said the project, estimated at up to $90 billion, would not begin “real construction” until 2030 and could place a significant burden on taxpayers.
The Conservatives say the projected cost exceeds the current federal deficit and would require ongoing subsidies. They also point to delays in the timeline and concerns about potential land expropriation along the proposed corridor.
The Liberals have not responded directly to the latest comments, but have previously positioned the project as a long-term investment in national transportation infrastructure.
When asked for a response on the fact Peterborough city council has supported Alto, Poilievre says people are simply not in favour.
Poilievre said his party would instead focus on improving existing transportation systems and supporting privately funded infrastructure projects aimed at boosting efficiency and lowering costs.
