Peterborough is making a play to land on the map of a proposed high-speed rail corridor linking Toronto and Quebec City.
City council has thrown its support behind a resolution urging the federal government to include a Peterborough station as part of the ALTO High-Speed Rail Project.
The motion, brought forward by Coun. Kevin Duguay during Monday night’s meeting, positions Peterborough as a logical stop within the corridor, citing its location within eastern Ontario and proximity to the Greater Toronto economic region.
Council argues a station in the city would support economic development, improve workforce mobility and boost tourism, while also helping reduce congestion in the Greater Toronto Area.
The resolution also ties the proposal to local priorities, including sustainable growth, climate-conscious transportation and improved regional connectivity.
If included, council says a high-speed rail stop could serve not only Peterborough but a broader catchment area across the Kawarthas and surrounding communities.
With the motion approved, the city will now formally advocate for inclusion by sharing the resolution with federal officials, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, and ALTO CEO Martin Imbleau, along with provincial partners and municipalities across eastern Ontario.
The ALTO project is still in the planning stages, and no final route or station locations have been confirmed.
