A 22-year-old Peterborough man is facing multiple charges following a dangerous driving incident on Wednesday morning.
Around 6:50 am on March 18, the Peterborough Police Service received reports of a vehicle being driven at high speed, swerving into oncoming traffic, and failing to stop at a red light on Monaghan Road near Sherbrooke Street. A second call came in from a motorist indicating the same vehicle had struck them in an intersection and fled. A third call indicated the vehicle had crashed into a snowbank, popped a tire, and continued driving.
Officers located a matching vehicle on York Drive, shortly after a minor collision with a transit bus. When speaking with the driver, police discovered that the man, a Novice driver, was presenting a driver’s license that was not his own. Signs of impairment were also observed. No one was injured during the incidents.
The 22-year-old has been charged with:
-
Operation while Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs
-
Operation while Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)
-
Fail to notify change of address – license
-
Novice driver – B.A.C. above zero (Highway Traffic Act)
-
Use other person’s license (Highway Traffic Act)
-
Careless driving (Highway Traffic Act)
-
Fail to remain (Highway Traffic Act)
The accused received an automatic 90-day license suspension and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. He was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on April 28.
Police thank the concerned residents who called in and remind the public: if you see a possible impaired driver, call 9-1-1 immediately.
