With just weeks remaining in its annual campaign, United Way Peterborough & District says it is within reach of its $1.6-million fundraising goal.
Campaign organizers delivered their latest update Thursday from the rooftop of a downtown Peterborough building, where 2025 campaign chair Paul Rellinger addressed supporters gathered below.
The appearance revived the well-known “Relly on the Roof” fundraiser Rellinger launched in 2011, when he spent time atop buildings raising money for local causes.
United Way officials say the campaign has now reached 96 per cent of its target, leaving about $61,000 to be raised before the March 31 deadline.
Standing above the crowd, Rellinger thanked the community for its support and urged residents to help bring the campaign across the finish line.
“Many people in this community will remember when I spent time on rooftops raising money for local causes,” Rellinger said. “I never expected to be back up here again, but when you’re this close to your goal, you are willing to go to great heights to finish the job.”
Jim Russell said the campaign reflects the generosity of residents, workplaces and volunteers throughout the region.
“We’re incredibly proud of what this community has already accomplished,” Russell said. “When we come together, we can make a real difference in the lives of our neighbours.”
Funds raised through United Way Peterborough & District stay in the community, supporting a network of 20 local organizations and programs that address issues such as poverty, food insecurity, housing instability, mental health and social isolation.
Rellinger said the final stretch of fundraising will help ensure those programs can continue to respond to growing needs across the region.
“We’re just $61,000 away from our goal,” he said. “That final four per cent represents real support for people in our community who need it most.”
