A special weather statement has been issued for the Peterborough area as significant rainfall is expected through midweek.
Environment Canada says 20 to 40 millimetres of rain is possible beginning tonight and continuing through Wednesday across much of southern Ontario, including Peterborough, Lakefield, and southern Peterborough County.
Forecasters say the saturated or frozen ground may have difficulty absorbing the rainfall, which could lead to water pooling on roads and localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Heavy downpours are also possible if thunderstorms develop, which could push rainfall totals higher in some locations.
Environment Canada says rainfall warnings may be issued as the weather system approaches.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and check with their local conservation authority or the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for the latest flood information.
