A pilot program allowing residents to purchase on-street parking permits is moving ahead in two areas of the city.
Council with the City of Peterborough approved the program but removed one of the originally proposed zones in the Parklands subdivision off Milroy Drive. The pilot will now operate in two designated areas, identified as Pilot Program Area 1 and Pilot Program Area 3.
City officials say the two locations were chosen to reflect different parking conditions across Peterborough. Results from the pilot will be reviewed and used to help determine whether a permanent on-street parking permit program should be introduced.
The permits would allow holders to park beyond the current maximum time limits and seasonal restrictions outlined in the city’s parking by-law. All other parking rules would still apply, and permits could be temporarily suspended to allow for operations such as snow removal or street sweeping.
Permit options are expected to include 24-hour, weekly, monthly, six-month, and annual passes. Each address in the pilot areas will receive up to 10 free 24-hour permits per year, with additional 24-hour permits costing $20.
To limit demand, the number of permits available in each area will be capped at 75 per cent of the legal parking spaces, with a maximum of three permits allowed per address. Applicants will need to show proof of residency and vehicle ownership, and must not have any unpaid parking tickets.
The city says the pilot program was identified as part of its work under the federal Housing Accelerator Fund and is expected to begin selling permits by the end of March.
