City crews are on the move repairing potholes across Peterborough as roads take a beating from winter’s freeze–thaw cycles.
Potholes form when water seeps into pavement cracks, freezes and expands, then contracts as temperatures rise, eventually breaking the asphalt under traffic. Repairs ramp up in late winter and early spring when melting snow, rain, and fluctuating temperatures increase road damage.
Public Works prioritizes high-traffic and safety-sensitive areas, using temporary cold patch asphalt until plants reopen for longer-lasting hot mix repairs. City staff maintain roughly 1,028 kilometres of roadway, with spring repair activity peaking during the thaw.
Residents can report potholes online at peterborough.ca/ServiceRequest or by calling 705-745-1386, providing exact locations or nearby intersections. Motorists are urged to slow down and maintain a safe distance near crews.
Half-load restrictions on designated municipal roads remain in effect until April 30, 2026, to protect vulnerable pavement during the spring thaw.
