The City of Peterborough has been recognized with a 2025 Leaders in Sustainability Award for its battery recycling efforts, after community members helped divert more than 22,600 kilograms of batteries from landfill last year.
The award was presented by Call2Recycle Canada through its Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, which supports the safe collection and recycling of end-of-life batteries across the country.
Officials say the City’s strong collection totals reflect local participation and growing awareness about proper battery disposal. Recycling batteries helps prevent hazardous materials from entering landfill and allows valuable metals such as lithium and nickel to be recovered and reused.
Call2Recycle reported its most successful year on record in 2025, collecting more than eight million kilograms of batteries nationwide, a 17 per cent increase over the previous year.
The City continues to take part in the Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program by offering several convenient drop-off locations throughout the community.
