TELUS Cup introductory press conference in Peterborough
With just over a week left to sign up, the clock is ticking for anyone who wants to be part of one of the biggest hockey events Peterborough has hosted in years.
The 2026 TELUS Cup, Canada’s national under-18 men’s club championship, arrives at the Peterborough Memorial Centre from April 20 to 26. Six elite teams from across the country, including the host Peterborough Minor Petes, will battle for a national title in a week-long tournament that has launched the careers of future NHL stars.
But before the puck drops, organizers need a team of their own to help put on the event and make it a success for our city.
Communications Specialist with the City of Peterborough, Andrea Pade, says many volunteers are required to fill multiple roles during the event.
Organizers are looking to fill a wide range of roles, from game day operations and in-game ceremonies to selling 50/50 tickets and scanning tickets at the door. Volunteers are also needed to engage with fans in the stands, support media services, assist with merchandise sales, and provide medical coverage throughout the tournament.
Transportation is another key area. Drivers and dispatch volunteers will help move teams, officials and event staff between hotels, the airport and local arenas, ensuring everyone gets where they need to be safely and on time.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, as of December 1, 2025, and commit to a minimum of four shifts ranging from two to five hours. All applicants must complete a security screening, with some positions requiring additional checks such as a criminal record or vulnerable sector check. Transportation roles also require a driver’s abstract and safe driver agreement.
Pade says there are volunteer roles for everyone, whether you have hockey experience or not.
The TELUS Cup has been a stepping stone for hundreds of NHL players since it began in 1974, including Wendel Clark, Sidney Crosby, Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy
This will mark the first time Peterborough has hosted the event and the first time since 2019 that the national championship is being held in Ontario.
Applications can be submitted online at hockeycanada.ca/teluscup until February 28 and questions about volunteering can be directed to volunteer@hockeycanada.ca.
