The Peterborough Petes will host their annual Indigenous Heritage Night tonight when they face the North Bay Battalion.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.
The evening will feature performances by the Smoke Trail Drum and Dance Group from Alderville First Nation. The group will perform in the lobby before the game and on the ice during the first intermission.
A ceremonial puck drop will include representatives from Crowe’s Gas, Alderville First Nation, Curve Lake First Nation and Hiawatha First Nation.
Storytelling will also be featured on the videoboard throughout the game, including teachings of Sky Woman and Turtle Island.
The Petes will once again use a special logo designed by Kory Parkin, an Indigenous painter and digital creator from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The design incorporates the traditional name for Peterborough, Nogojiwanong, meaning “place at the foot of the rapids.”
Parkin said the artwork reflects the area’s history as a gathering and fishing place, incorporating imagery of a canoe and rushing water to represent the meaning of the name.
Limited tickets remain available through the Petes box office. The game will also be broadcast on YourTV Peterborough, Freq 90.5.
