Peterborough County OPP have put out a warning after a Trent Lakes resident reported losing $55,000 in a fraud.
According to police, the victim received a call from someone claiming to represent their cell phone provider, who said the account had been hacked. The caller advised that a security code would be sent by email.
The victim received what appeared to be a legitimate email and, after initially hanging up out of suspicion, called back the number provided. They were reconnected with the same individual and provided the security code.
Shortly afterward, the victim’s phone and email accounts were compromised. Upon returning home, the victim discovered their bank account had been accessed and approximately $55,000 had been transferred out.
Police say the victim immediately contacted their bank, which was able to recover roughly $36,000. Efforts continue to recover the remaining funds.
The OPP are reminding residents not to rely on contact information provided by unsolicited callers. Instead, hang up and contact your bank or service provider directly using a verified phone number.
Officials also advise residents never to share banking details, personal information, or security codes over the phone or by email.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam is encouraged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
