Peterborough police are investigating an attempted distraction theft involving jewellery in a Costco parking lot.
At around 5:30pm on Friday, a woman in her 60s reported being approached by a man while she was loading groceries into her vehicle near the gas bar.
The man told her that, as part of his religious tradition, he wanted to give her jewellery to support his ill mother who was going into surgery. The woman agreed, and the man placed a necklace around her neck and a ring on her finger. While doing so, she noticed her own necklace in his hand and took it back. The man then drove away quickly.
Police are looking to identify a vehicle described as an older, four-door grey sedan with two female passengers in the back and a male passenger in the front seat. That passenger was described as being in his 30s with a beard.
The driver is described as a man in his late 40s to early 50s.
