With Black History Month marked throughout February, yet another related event will be held at the Peterborough Public Library.
Held in partnership with the Afrocentric Awareness Network of Peterborough, the 1 to 3:30 pm event on February 15th will feature Nigerian dance, Jamaican and African food, and a specially themed craft.
Network spokesperson Charmaine Magumbe, who is chair of Peterborough’s Community and Race Relations Committee, says the City of Peterborough’s first recognition of Black History Month back in 2019 has proven huge in terms of increased awareness of the contributions and achievements of black Canadians.
Magumbe says while the library event is a fitting celebration, it shouldn’t be lost on anyone that there’s much work to be done combatting racism, including reported incidents in some schools.
Magumbe says a continued influx of newcomers to the city will lead to good things.
In addition to the library celebration, an anti-racism workshop will be held February 25th at Sadleir House, starting at 6:30 p.m.
