The City of Peterborough has launched a new snowplow tracker, giving residents a way to follow in near real-time the plowing and treating of roads during winter maintenance operations.
The map uses GPS/Automatic Vehicle Locating (AVL) technology to display the location and progress of snowplows as they work to clear roads and keep transportation routes safe throughout snow events. Data on the map is refreshed every five minutes and will be active for the winter season.
The interactive map allows residents to see plow activity in near real-time, track progress on prioritized routes including major arterial roads, transit routes, and residential streets. The map shows latest plow activity using a colour key to indicate the time since that road was last serviced: green means less than one hour ago, orange is one to two hours, blue for two to six hours, pink for six to twelve hours, purple for 12 to 24 hours, and no colour if it’s been more than 24 hours.
The City notes that arterial and collector roads are cleared first, as required by provincial standards, before crews move to residential streets. The map gives residents a clear picture of route priorities, the scale of winter operations, and when roads in their neighbourhood are likely to be cleared, increasing transparency and understanding of the city’s efforts.
Updates on plowing are provided for informational purposes only and do not guarantee road conditions or levels of snow and ice removal. Residents are reminded to practise safe driving, adjust to current conditions, and avoid travelling in adverse weather whenever possible.
The map was developed by the City’s Geomatics/Mapping Division in collaboration with the Public Works Division.
