Peterborough’s temporary emergency overnight shelter at 161 Carnegie Ave. will remain open through the night Friday, as demand for emergency housing continues in the city.
The shelter, located in a former fire services building, operates daily from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. and is a temporary addition to the City of Peterborough’s 127-bed emergency shelter system. City officials say approximately 25 people have stayed at the Carnegie Avenue location each night since it opened on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Individuals in need of emergency shelter are asked to first contact one of the city’s regular emergency shelters and will be referred to the Carnegie Avenue site if no space is available. Transportation from regular shelters to the temporary location will be provided when needed.
Peterborough’s regular emergency shelters include Brock Mission Men’s Shelter on Murray Street, the YES Shelter for Youth and Families on Brock Street, Cameron House on Chemong Road, and Trinity Community Centre on Reid Street, which operates daytime and overnight drop-in programs.
Those experiencing homelessness who require assistance accessing shelter can contact Social Services at 178 Charlotte St. during regular business hours. After-hours assistance is available by calling 705-926-0096.
