The temporary overnight emergency shelter at 161 Carnegie Ave. will remain open until Friday morning, January 30, providing an additional 40 beds to the city’s 127-bed emergency shelter system.
The shelter, set up in a former fire services building, operates from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. People seeking shelter are first directed to regular shelters and referred to Carnegie if space is unavailable, with transportation provided as needed.
Regular shelters include Brock Mission Men’s Shelter, YES Shelter for Youth and Families, Cameron House, and Trinity Community Centre, which also runs daytime and overnight drop-in programs.
Emergency services and homelessness agencies have been notified of the temporary shelter’s availability as Environment Canada forecasts overnight lows between –16°C and –21°C throughout the week.
