Ontario Provincial Police released details yesterday about a New Year’s Eve incident that saw a vehicle end up at the bottom of Cordova Lake in Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township.
A vehicle ended up at the bottom of Cordova Lake after a driver accidentally drove onto the ice on New Year’s Eve in Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township.
Peterborough County OPP say they were called around 7:15 pm Wednesday, Dec. 31 after a vehicle became stuck on the ice and could not make it back to shore. Police say the driver was trying to reach a friend’s home, took a wrong turn because of poor weather, and unknowingly drove onto the frozen lake.
Once the driver realized what had happened, they tried to turn around but could not get any traction. The driver left the vehicle on the ice and walked to a nearby residence to call a tow truck and notify police.
When the vehicle owner returned with a towing company, the vehicle had already broken through the ice. The hole was marked for safety and the Ministry of the Environment was notified. No one was hurt, and the vehicle has since been removed from the lake.
OPP are reminding the public that no ice is safe ice and to avoid travelling on frozen lakes and waterways unless conditions are known to be safe.
