A wintry mix could travel hazardous in Peterborough today with freezing rain expected to coat roads and sidewalks in ice.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement calling for several hours of freezing rain beginning Tuesday afternoon and continuing into the evening. Areas could see 1 to 5 millimetres of ice accumulation, with the precipitation occasionally mixing with snow or ice pellets before changing over to all snow later in the evening.
Along the Lake Ontario shoreline, temperatures could rise above freezing, causing a change to rain in some areas. Drivers are being warned that icy surfaces may be difficult to detect, and localized power outages are possible. Residents are urged to take extra precautions on icy roads and sidewalks
In response to the hazardous conditions, all school transportation has been cancelled for the second day in a row. The STSCO announced that buses will not run for any KPR, PVNC, or MonAvenir schools in Peterborough City and County. Schools remain open, for anyone who can safely get there.
