The Ontario Hockey League and Canadian Hockey League are mourning the death of former commissioner David Branch, who died Sunday at the age of 77.
Branch, a native of Bathurst, New Brunswick and longtime Whitby resident, served as OHL commissioner for 45 years from 1979 until his retirement in 2024. He also held the role of CHL president from 1996 to 2019, helping shape major junior hockey across Canada.
During his tenure, Branch oversaw significant growth in the OHL and CHL, with a focus on player development, education, and safety. He was instrumental in the creation of the OHL Scholarship Program, ensuring players had access to post-secondary education after their playing careers.
His influence also extended beyond league offices, including serving on the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
“This is a very sad day for a lot of people,” said OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford, noting Branch’s long-standing impact on the league and its players.
Branch was recognized nationally for his contributions to the sport, receiving the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2016 and induction into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. Several league awards and initiatives bear his name, including the CHL David Branch Player of the Year Award.
The OHL and CHL have extended condolences to Branch’s family, including his partner Patsy and sons Barclay, Kyle and Wade. Funeral and memorial details are expected to be announced in the coming days.
