Today is the final chance to take advantage of two hours of free parking in downtown Peterborough as the city’s holiday parking program comes to an end.
The program, which launched November 28, allows drivers to park free for up to two hours in all municipal on-street spaces, municipal parking lots, the King Street Parkade and the Simcoe Parking Garage. The goal has been to make it easier for people to shop, dine and spend time downtown during the holiday season.
While parking is free during the two-hour window, anyone who chose to pay at meters, pay-and-display machines or through the HotSpot app helped support Kawartha Food Share. All voluntary parking fees collected during the program are donated to the organization.
The initiative has also served as a long-running fundraiser. Last year, the program raised $12,001.77 for Kawartha Food Share. Since its launch in 2003, it has generated $251,627.65, not including donations from this year, which have yet to be finalized.
Kawartha Food Share supports more than 14,000 people each month through food banks, meal programs, housing initiatives and food cupboards across the region.
