Peterborough and area residents are being warned to prepare for hazardous winter conditions, including strong winds, snow squalls, and low wind chills.
Environment Canada says southwest winds will reach 40 km/h this morning, gusting to 60 km/h, before shifting northwest this afternoon with gusts up to 80 km/h. Areas with ice from recent freezing rain will be especially at risk. Officials say the strong winds could cause power outages, damage trees or buildings, and disrupt travel and services.
Snow squalls and local blowing snow are expected this afternoon, adding to slippery conditions on roads and sidewalks. Total snowfall today is forecast around 2 cm, with temperatures falling to minus 4 and wind chill values near minus 15.
Tonight, northwest winds will ease slightly, but flurries and blowing snow will continue. Temperatures will drop to minus 14, with wind chill values plunging to minus 24 overnight.
Residents are urged to secure loose objects, avoid areas near fallen power lines, and exercise caution near rivers, lakes, and creeks, as ice is unsafe and currents are strong.
People are encouraged to monitor updates from Environment Canada and report severe weather via email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or on X using #ONStorm.
