The Township of Selwyn has declared a Significant Weather Event as Environment Canada issues an ice storm warning in effect from Sunday through Monday.
Officials say the declaration is being made under Ontario Regulation 366/18, which amended minimum maintenance standards for municipal highways, and reflects the potential danger icy conditions may pose to drivers and pedestrians.
Residents are being urged to postpone non-essential travel until conditions improve, as freezing rain is expected to create icy and hazardous roadways. Poor weather conditions may also contribute to transportation delays. Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to use extreme caution, and that overnight parking is prohibited on all township roads during the winter season to allow for safe and effective snow and ice control operations.
A Significant Weather Event temporarily suspends standard timelines for winter road maintenance, allowing municipal crews to monitor conditions and deploy resources when deemed appropriate. Normal maintenance timelines will resume once the township declares the event has ended.
The township emphasized the declaration does not indicate a reduced level of service, but serves as a notice to residents that hazardous conditions may prolong the time required to restore roads to a safe condition.
