Peterborough police conducted a Festive RIDE enforcement blitz Friday and Saturday nights, stopping hundreds of vehicles in an effort to curb impaired driving during the holiday season.
Officers with the Peterborough Police Service carried out spot checks at several locations in Peterborough and Cavan Monaghan. Police say 430 vehicles were checked and 34 roadside sobriety tests were administered.
As a result of the initiative, one driver was arrested after failing a sobriety test, while another was arrested for refusing to comply. Three additional drivers were charged with various offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
Police are reminding motorists that impairment by alcohol or drugs is illegal and entirely preventable. Drivers are urged to plan ahead by arranging a ride, using a taxi or public transit, choosing a designated driver or staying overnight.
Festive RIDE checks will continue throughout the holiday season and into the new year. Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is encouraged to call 911.
