Peterborough Transit has been recognized as the top public transit system in Canada for ridership among cities with populations under 100,000, according to a national year-in-review released by the Canadian Urban Transit Association.
CUTA’s Canadian Transit Wrapped 2025, issued December 9th, highlights notable milestones and performance across the country’s transit sector, including overall ridership, per-capita use and year-over-year growth. Peterborough Transit recorded more than 3.7 million rides in 2025, earning the top spot in its population category.
“Being recognized by CUTA is a meaningful acknowledgment of the dedication of our entire transit team,” municipal operations co-chairs Keith Riel and Don Vassiliadis said in a joint statement. “Our drivers, maintenance staff, planners and support teams work hard every day to provide reliable service, and we’re grateful to our riders and the community for their continued support.”
Barry Wakeford, the city’s director of transit services, said the recognition reflects collaboration across the organization and the community.
“We’re proud to be named number one in transit ridership among Canadian cities under 100,000,” Wakeford said. “Thank you to city council, the senior leadership team, our dedicated drivers and support staff, and most importantly, every rider for making this possible.”
Founded more than 120 years ago, CUTA represents public transit systems across Canada, connecting transit professionals, sharing industry data and research, and advocating for the sector. The association also promotes best practices and recognizes member achievements through awards and annual highlights.
Peterborough Transit operates regular bus routes seven days a week, with fully accessible buses on all routes. Riders can plan trips and track buses in real time using the My Transit Ride GPS tracker and trip planner at pt.mytransitride.com, Google Maps, or the Transit, Subway & Bus Times app, which operates independently of the city.
The system also offers an Accessible Van Service for eligible riders with mobility needs, as well as The Link rural transit service connecting to Curve Lake First Nation, Lakefield, Ennismore and Bridgenorth.
