The holidays are meant to be joyful, but for many families, the stress behind the season can build quickly.
Five Counties Children’s Centre is encouraging parents to get ahead of that pressure by focusing on self-care, planning, and realistic expectations. Local research shows more than half of parents report feeling frequent stress, especially during busy periods like the holidays when routines change and emotions run high.
Occupational therapist Nicole Captain says when adults take steps to manage their own emotions, they are better prepared to support children who may be dealing with excitement, schedule disruptions, or sensory overload.
Captain emphasizes that regulating yourself first makes such a difference.
She adds that preparation and open communication can go a long way in preventing overwhelm for both parents and kids. That includes planning ahead, setting boundaries, and adjusting expectations to match what families can realistically handle.
Captain says caring for your own well-being helps set the tone for the entire household.
She says a patient parent helps create a calmer, more manageable holiday for everyone, adding that simplicity is a key factor.
Five Counties Children’s Centre says prioritizing self-care can help families enjoy a smoother, more meaningful holiday season.
