After a couple of days of heavy snowfall, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding drivers to stay cautious as winter weather continues to affect roads across the province.
Snow, ice, and reduced visibility create hazardous conditions, and wildlife on rural routes adds another layer of risk for motorists.
The OPP is encouraging drivers to take basic precautions to prevent collisions. Winter tires, cleared windows and mirrors, and slower speeds can make a big difference. Drivers should avoid cruise control on slippery roads, increase following distances, and watch for black ice, particularly on bridges and in shaded areas. Checking road conditions ahead of time at 511 Ontario is also recommended.
Rural drivers are urged to be especially alert for deer and other animals, which are most active at dawn and dusk. High-beams can help spot wildlife, but should be dimmed for oncoming traffic. If a collision with an animal seems possible, the OPP advises slowing down, staying in your lane, and avoiding sudden swerves. Large animal sightings should be reported to the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
The OPPĀ says public safety is a shared responsibility, and following these tips helps keep everyone on the road safe this winter. Drivers are also reminded to call 911 if they suspect impaired driving or report unlawful activity to the OPP or Crime Stoppers.
