Kawartha Food Share is gearing up for one of the biggest community events of the year — the 25th annual Loonies on the Street fundraiser, set to take place tomorrow outside Peterborough Square. Running from 7am until 10am, the event will be broadcast live on Oldies 96.7 and Freq 90.5, giving residents across the region the chance to see the action and contribute in real time.
Kawartha Food Share currently assists more than 14,000 men, women, and children every month through its 36 member agencies. This includes four meal programs, four City food banks, six housing projects, seven County food banks, and more than 20 food cupboards across the City and County of Peterborough. Last year, the warehouse distributed over $10 million worth of food and emergency care needs, highlighting the critical role the organization plays in the community.
General Manager Ashlee Aitken says Loonies on the Street is always a feel-good event that kicks off the holiday season for the organization.
Loonies on the Street gives the community a chance to make monetary donations that directly support Kawartha Food Share’s food budget for the year ahead, helping purchase a wide range of items for local food banks and meal programs. The popular fundraiser has become a staple of the local holiday season, with every dollar raised staying in our community and making a direct impact on those who rely on these services. Aitken says they have set a lofty goal for this year’s event.
Beyond the physical donations at the event, Kawartha Food Share also accepts contributions through their website and has collection bins in grocery stores across the city. Aitken notes that community donors are always welcome to visit the warehouse to see how their donations are distributed.
Aitken stresses that the fundraiser is a reminder of Peterborough’s generosity and how much local residents continue to support those in need, even during challenging times. She says community backing is what allows Kawartha Food Share to sustain its programs year after year.
